A Note from Music

Dear Third Grade Parents:

Your child will be studying the recorder (a flute-like instrument) every year throughout Grades 3-5. grade. An integral part of the music curriculum, the recorder helps students learn to read music and provides an instrument for solo or ensemble playing.

Students are required to have a recorder for use this year. We will be pre-ordering the recorders for AED 45. This money is to be given to the account department located on the first floor of the elementary school.  A receipt will be given to you, and your child’s name will be marked off on our list. He/she can then collect the instrument from me in January.

ALL PAYMENTS MUST BE TURNED IN BEFORE DECEMBER 1st.

Dear DAA Parents and Students,

Music reading is part of the music curriculum in all grades and one of the most effective ways to learn is through a solo instrument. The recorder is a woodwind instrument ideal for elementary students. In grades 3-5, recorders will be included in the instruction.

Our 3rd grade recorder unit will begin the week of May 18th. We have a classroom set of recorders to use at school; however, students will benefit from practice at home with their own recorder.

Recorders come in many brands and can be purchased for AED 25-45. Here are some of my recommendations and where to buy them:

Winter Concert

I want to thank those of you who were able to come to our ES Winter Concert yesterday. The children did a truly remarkable job and demonstrated such excellence, professional performance behavior, and of course, plenty of cuteness! 

It was a treat to see so many of you there. I just feel remiss that I didn't have the time to personally welcome and greet each one of you; however, with all of the picture-taking, movement, and excitable children, it just wasn't possible. Please know that I appreciate you coming and hope that we can connect at our class party next week. (Details on that coming in the next blog post.) 

Here are some truly beautiful pictures that one of class mothers, Mikyung, captured and shared. I'm so appreciative of her talent and willingness to help, as it frees me up to focus even more on the children. 

I hope you'll enjoy these precious memories and give your sweetie an extra big squeeze for a job very well done. 

A note from music

Notes from Music Class

Our music concert is approaching very soon. It will be held in the DAA auditorium on December 8th at 9AM. 

All students are to wear the following for the concert:

Anyone can pick to be a snowflake or a snirt, unless you have a specific line or part that states you are specifically one or the other.

Snowflake Attire: White collared shirt or blouse with black pants/skirt. A white dress may be worn as well for the ladies.

Snirt Attire: White/grey dirty collared shirt or blouse with black pants/skirt.

The students have worked very hard to put on an amazing concert! I am sure you all will enjoy it!

Dear DAA Parents and Students,

Music reading is part of the music curriculum in all grades and one of the most effective and fun ways of learning this is to play an instrument!  The recorder is a woodwind instrument ideal for students and will prepare them for music in middle school. In grades 3-5, the recorder will be included in instruction.

Recorder instruction will begin April 12, 2015. If your child’s recorder is still at home, please have him/her bring it to school and keep it in the locker until then.  

All students are expected to have their recorders in class by April 12, 2015. If a student doesn't have a recorder in class by April 19 (the following Sunday), it will affect their participation grade.
Students are REQUIRED to have a recorder by April 12, 2015. 

We ask all students to bring their own recorders to class as part of their normal school materials. New recorders are reasonably priced. You can get cheap ones for as little as AED 15; however, you can expect to pay about AED 25-45 for one that is better quality.

PS. If your child is particularly forgetful, I'd recommend purchasing two recorders. Keep one at school and one at home for practice. 

ES WINTER CONCERT

“Celebrate the Holidays” is coming...to DAA!

Hello DAA community!

By now, you have probably heard your child/children sharing their excitement about our upcoming concert, “Celebrate the Holidays”. This is a huge undertaking for the Elementary School at DAA as all 500+ students are working together to bring this mini-musical to you in December.

By working together on choreography, songs, performance posture, stage etiquette, and spoken dialogue, your children have gained first-hand experience of preparing for a theatrical production! Hard-work, responsibility, commitment, dedication, and leadership are just a few of the life-skills that your children have practiced each and everyday in music class!

I have been amazed at the sense of responsibility that our students show. The ES Music Blog  is updated to reflect the activities happening in music class.

Great care was taken to organize the concerts so that holidays from different cultures were reflected throughout the performances. Depending on the grade level, the songs will reflect Ramadan, Diwali, St. Lucia Day, a freedom song from South Africa, SinterKlaas, Central American Spanish Christmas and songs that celebrate the winter and the holiday season.

Concert Times:

• 3rd Grade:  Tuesday, December9@11:50pm
• 4th Grade:  Wednesday, December10@12:30pm
• 5th Grade:  Thursday, December11@12:30pm

Concert Dress:

• Bottoms: Black trousers (or long black skirt BELOW THE KNEE is acceptable)
• Shoes: Black or dark-colored,closed-toe shoes (no light-up runners)
• Tops: Entirely Black OR Entirely White shirt/blouse--no designs, colors, words, etc.

This is a great opportunity for students to share their learning at home become your “teachers.” Consider taking time over the next couple of weeks to talk about, explore, practice, dance, and sing. Help us to make this an experience that the students won’t soon forget. They are so excited to know that YOU are excited to watch them!
