๐ŸŒŸ Talent Show Recap and Gratitude๐ŸŒŸ

To those of you who were able to make it, thank you so much for coming to our end-of-year talent show. It was so great to see the students beam with excitement and pride (and some embarrassment, too!) as they shared their talents and hard work. I was seriously impressed to see so many well-developed skills. I commend all of your hard work, grit, and perseverance to keep pushing yourselves further and further, as you do the things you enjoy. I hope you'll continue, as well!

So, here are the students who presented, if you didn't get a chance to come to the party...

Shared in class with a picture:
  • Jordan--his creativity through art
  • Aly--football
  • Sofiya--art (displayed on white board) and figure ice-skating

And, you can view these, which were sent in via email:
I would also like to thank you, dear parents, for giving me the generous Mall of the Emirates gift card. It was so nice to use the money to purchase what I really wanted, which was an iPhone 7!  (I feel like a new woman with all of this storage...128 MB!!)

Ms. Csilla is also very grateful for her gift card, as well, and was especially surprised that the class remembered her summer birthday. Here are some fun pictures:

Lastly, I want to thank Doaa one last time for all of her tremendous help this year as our class mother. She truly lightened my load, eased a good deal of stress, and was such a joy to work with! (I know you parents have also appreciated her!)

I also want to thank each and every one of you, dear parents, for all of the countless ways that you supported me this year. I saw it played out in so many ways...from the way you read with your child at night, encouraged him/her to homework, practiced math facts, and read the blog, to your kind and encouraging emails, hugs, warm smiles in the hallway, donations to souk day and treasure box, and for the way you entrusted your child to me. That's the biggest one of all. For all of these, I sincerely thank you. You've all truly been so fantastic. (This is one of every teacher's dreams, by the way.)

Missing Library Books

Dear Parents,

Could you please take a minute to see if any of these somehow ended up at your house? Ms. Csilla and I have searched in our classroom to no avail and, every year, we always discover that a few often make it home to students' houses.

Thanks so much!

End of Year Party

  • Please mark your calendars for our End-of-Year Party on Tuesday, June 13, from 12:15-1:30 in our classroom. The theme will be "3LN Has Talent" and an opportunity for our cuties to showcase their unique gifts and abilities. So, start preparing, students! Singing, acting, dancing, paper plane flying, impersonations, story-telling, fashion, drawing, comedy, horse-riding, tennis? What can you do well?!
    • If you have a talent that is not easily performed in the classroom, please pre-record it and send it to me as a file or on a flash drive by June 11, so I can have it ready without any glitches.
    • Please be cognizant of the time and keep talents to less than 4-5 min. max.
    • Children may do an individual talent, as well as a partner/group one; however, please limit it to two maximum due to time constraints.
    • Also, if there are any who do not wish to participate, that's no problem. We want to make your party as fun and stress-free as possible. :)
  • Library books and textbooks: The time has come for us to return all of our beloved borrowed books back to their homes. This includes both library books and the Everyday Math Student Reference Book, which have all already been returned, thankfully. Thank you in advance!
  • As we starting to have more indoor recesses these days, we are starting to enjoy a fantastic series called Wild Arabia by BBC. We started watching the first one a few weeks ago, since we studied so much about the Bedouin this year (as well as animal adaptations, climate, weather, and dependent relationships in ecosystems), and the class was mesmerized. Here are the episodes if you'd like to view them at home:
Academic News:
  • Reading and Writing: We have just finished our Reading for Research and Persuasive writing. Overall, the class did a very good job and I'm pleased with the amount of time, effort, and accuracy that has been put in these two last literacy units. For the last two weeks, students will be reading fiction books, doing Reader's Theater, and preparing for debates (using their newly gained persuasive writing skills).
  • Math: Since our last official unit (9) is complete, we are working through Unit 10, which is about measurement. There will not be a test on this unit. Don't worry. :)
  • Science: As you know, we are ending our unit with the animal project. I'm excited to see the students' creations on Wednesday or Thursday morning at the very latest!
I think that's it. Thanks so much for all of your wonderful support. With only about 2 weeks left, I'm really starting to feel sad about saying good-bye to "my" precious children!

PS. This is a pretty funny article, which describes how a few of you may be feeling right about now. I was thinking one of us teachers should write one from our perspective. :)

Field Trip Recap

We had a great time at The Green Planet today! Though we got off to a later start than expected, once we were there, it was nonstop excitement and learning. The students enjoyed hearing more about the different relationships that plants and animals have in the rainforest (positive, negative, and neutral), as well as trying to find hidden creatures that had excellent camouflage. The real highlight for most all of the children, however, was getting to see a REAL sloth in action...well, in slow action, anyway. (Actually, we were all surprised to see that it moved faster than we expected.)

This is the kind of place in Dubai that definitely merits a second visit, especially when one has more time to really take it all in and read and see all that is available. If you haven't yet been and you'll be around for a while this summer, this would be a fun and cool activity. I imagine you wouldn't face any crowds, either.

In the meantime, please enjoy these pictures from our visit today. As you will see, the students generally had a truly fantastic time!

PS. Thank you for responding so quickly to the last-minute field trip. The other Grade 3 teachers and I were commenting on how great you were to sign the permission slips and send in the money so quickly. Please know that we really appreciate your support!!

Sooo, I was finally able to catch up on posting pictures of our most recent events including the following:
  • Baby Rhino activities
  • Visits to Dubai National School (Zaid and Farida went on the the second visit)
  • Thanksgiving pictures (Somehow, I missed posting those!)
  • Plenty of other misc. learning fun
I hope you'll enjoy them!

๐ŸŽค Lip Dub ๐ŸŽฌ

We just love the Grade 5 Lip Dub and thought you might, too.

Enjoy and congratulations to those graduating!

Recommended Website ๐Ÿ’ป

I want to share a fantastic resource that you might find useful, especially during the summer months. It's called Common Sense Media

Their mission sums it up well:

Our Mission

Common Sense is the leading independent nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids thrive in a world of media and technology. We empower parents, teachers, and policymakers by providing unbiased information, trusted advice, and innovative tools to help them harness the power of media and technology as a positive force in all kids’ lives.
I hope you'll find it useful and if you see Ms. W. (the student's IT teacher), please take a moment to thank her for sharing this excellent info!

You are invited...

Dear Parents,
I want to welcome you to attend our

"Third Grade Zoo"

Thursday, June 8, from 8:40-9:20 AM in Room 220 (our classroom)

This will be an open house for 3LN, 3MLK, and 3OP and a time for students to tell you all about their creature creations. I will be providing this sheet for you to use as a great conversation too. Students should *hopefully* be able to answer each question well.

This is the third year we've done this project and the children always love it. It's a wonderful and natural opportunity for them to practice and further develop their speaking, listening, and presentation skills.

We hope to see you there!

Ms. Laura

๐Ÿ ๐Ÿฐ Animal Project ๐Ÿ† ๐ŸŠ

To culminate our science unit and the work we have done on inherited traits, habitats, and adaptations, your child will be creating his/her own animal, a kind of "Creature Creation."

I will discuss the assignment and send the information home on Sunday; however, you may read the instructions here, as well.

One of the first things to do is to consider the habitat you want your animal to live in (see below), as well as the traits it will have. (This is a helpful worksheet to organize your thoughts, and the powerpoint is the same information. We will be doing this in class on Sunday.)

For a little inspiration, follow this link for the "make-your-animal" website. The possibilities are endless!

This is a fun link, which shows some rare animal adaptations. You might get some good ideas by viewing these, as well.  Finally, these are some of the creatures former students made. Some are better than others, but you will quickly get the idea.

Most importantly, this is a great way for your child to demonstrate what he/she knows and understands about adaptations and how they help plants and animals survive and reproduce. Have fun with it!

Habitats/Ecosystems

Desert
The temperature is very hot and dry.  There is very little water available to drink.  Food is sparse, and is found mostly in the form of very small animals & insects, as well as a very limited amount of plant life.  As such, animals have to move around a lot to find shelter, food, and water.  There are few predators.  Nothing moves very fast.
Rainforest
The temperature is very hot.  The air is constantly very humid, and it rains almost every day.  Both plant and animal life is abundant, and many different forms of food are available.  The food chain is very complex, and no matter how big or small an animal is, predators abound.  Trees are very close together, so even though animals can move around, they cannot do so very quickly.  All food sources are also very easy to find, but there is a lot of competition.
Ocean/Lake/River Environment
The water environment can be home to many different types of life (fish, birds, water-dwelling animals such as dolphins or beavers, etc.)  The temperature is constant and temperate.  Food MIGHT be available, if the animal can access it.  Water is abundant (obviously).  There are many predators.  Some animals can move quickly, depending on their traits.
Grassland/Prairies
Temperature ranges from cool to very hot.  There is not very much shelter, so animals need to move around a lot.  Animals also need to move around a lot (migrate) to find their food, although various forms of food are available.  Water is sometimes available, but at some times of the year it can be difficult to find.  There are many predators, and those predators can move very quickly across the land.

Forests
The average temperature of the forest is 10 degrees Celsius. The average amount of rainfall in the forest is 30 to 60 inches a year. As the seasons change, so do the colors of the leaves of the deciduous. During the winter months water is generally not available to keep the leaves of some plants alive. Therefore, the leaves of some plants fall off and grow back in the spring. Those plants, like evergreens, keep their leaves during the winter have special adaptations to stay alive.  Precipitation in the temperate deciduous forest is spread throughout the year. However, during the winter months it is usually frozen and unavailable to animals. Animals must adjust to cold winters and hot summers. Leaves generally fall off in the fall, leaving animals with less cover to hide themselves from predators. You'd find bears (black and brown), fox, squirrels, cardinals, raccoons, and snakes in this habitat as well as many others.

Arctic
The Arctic is a very cold, windy, and often snowy biome located around the North Pole.Animals that live in the Arctic (either full time or seasonally) are adapted to extreme conditions. Many animals who overwinter in the Arctic (like the Arctic fox and the ermine) have a coat that thickens and changes color to white during the winter as camouflage in the snow (blending into the background is called cryptic coloration). Some animals hibernate during the cold season; they go into a very deep, sleep-like state in which their heartbeat slows down. These animals often hibernate in an underground burrow or pit. Some hibernators include skunks, chipmunks, and some bears (but these bears are not true hibernators, they go into a state that is closer to a normal deep sleep). Many animals (like the Arctic tern) spend the summer months in the Arctic, but leave as the weather turns frigid and food becomes scarce (these animals return again the next summer, repeating this pattern year after year). This behavior is called migrating.

Field Trip Monday!

We're squeezing in one more field trip! Yes, since this program ties in so nicely with our current science unit, we Grade 3 teachers agreed that it would be really nice if the children could have one last opportunity to enjoy some hands-on learning. So, though it's a bit last minute (apologies!), we're going for it.

Permission slips were sent home on Wednesday, May 31, and here are all the details:
  • When? Monday, June 5
  • What time? Our bus will leave at 8:30, so please be at school by 8:15. The actual program runs from 9:00-11:00 AM. Busses will arrive back to school by 11:45 AM.
  • How much? AED 60
  • Why? To learn more about rainforest relationships (more below)
  • What else? Non-fasting students may bring a snack and water and will use a designated discreet area to eat/drink. Please return your permission slip on Sunday!
Rainforest Relationships

Life in the rainforest is competitive and survival is tough. Rainforest plants and animals have developed complex relationships with other species in order to survive in this diverse environment. The Rainforest Relationships program gives students the opportunity to explore these complex relationships and learn about how working together is the key to survival, while also getting to know the indigenous plants and animals.
Thanks so much for your support! We're looking forward to a thrilling morning!
